I had the privilege of walking with Robin for two days from Santa Barbara to Ventura, alongside two others. Spending that much time together allowed for deep, meaningful conversations, and one of the most impactful topics Robin introduced us to was nonviolent communication (or NVC), as described in the book titled “Nonviolent Communication” by Marshall Rosenberg. Robin carried the book with him along with lists of feelings and needs from the book, which we referenced while practicing NVC together during our walk. It was my first exposure to NVC, and I was immediately captivated!
As soon as I returned home, I bought a copy of the book for myself and my girlfriend, who had introduced me to Robin just months earlier and had been part of our four-person walking group. We quickly began reading and discussing it together, integrating its teachings into our daily lives. The impact was profound. First, applying NVC inwardly, tuning into my own feelings and recognizing which of my needs were met or unmet, helped me gain new insights into long-standing internal struggles. It deepened my self-awareness, increased my self-compassion, and opened new paths for healing and growth.
Beyond personal transformation, NVC has strengthened my relationships. My girlfriend and I already shared a deep connection, but practicing NVC has enhanced our ability to support and understand each other even more. I’ve also noticed significant improvements in how I connect with my children, parents, colleagues, and others. Leading with empathy has fostered deeper, more authentic connections in all areas of my life. I will forever be grateful to Robin for introducing me to NVC.
