"Trash Me" with Robin Greenfield

The average American creates 4.5 pounds of trash per day, yet most people never think twice about their trash. Once it’s in the garbage can, it’s out of sight, out of mind. Robin Greenfield wanted to create a visual that would help people understand just how much trash they create and inspire them to make positive changes.

So for 30 days, Robin Greenfield lived just like the average American and wore every piece of trash he created. Four-and-a-half pounds a day really adds up when you have to carry it with you everywhere you go.

Through this project, Robin, the award-winning filmmakers at Living on One, and Gary Bencheghib are out to change the throwaway mindset and create an unforgettable visual to be used as a tool for positive change for years to come. Learn more about the team and the project here.

Transcript: The following is a transcription of Trash Me with Robin Greenfield.

I’m here in New York City and I’m going to do a little experiment. For the next 30 days I’m going to wear every single piece of trash I create. I’m going to live just like average American creating 4.5 pounds of trash per day. I’ll eat, shop and consume just like the average person does. I won’t turn down any trash that is offered to me, from flyers and plastic bags to straws and cups.

Why am I doing this? Because trash is out of sight, out of mind. Most of us throw it in the garbage can and we never think about it again. I want to know, what would it look like to hold onto every single piece of trash I create for an entire month.
