Exploring Setting Down Roots in my Homeland

Hello friends of the Ashland area!

I have returned to my hometown of Ashland and am exploring the possibility of putting down roots here.
This fall I’m embarking on a year of foraging 100% of my food and Ashland will be my base for this endeavor. I’ll also be planting thousands of native fruit and nut trees throughout the region to help our community with food insecurity and be a steward to our Earth. At the least, I will be here for much of 2025 and 2026, and possibly for decades ahead.

I am seeking simple lodging short-term or longer-term and am putting this out to the community with the belief that an ideal match for a mutually beneficial relationship is out there.

What I’m seeking:

  • I am seeking to live outside of town in a relatively quiet place.
  • In a simple structure such as a shack, shed, cabin or tiny house, or a conducive spot to set up a canvas tent.
  • Water: No running water is needed, but water on sight would be ideal.
  • Electricity: No electricity or electricity. Open to either. Could just be an extension cord.
  • Preferably no Wi-Fi.
  • Wood stove for heating and cooking ideally.
  • Toilet: No toilet needed. I’ll have a compost toilet.
  • A level of privacy and solitude, out of sight is ideal. I really enjoy having a lot of solitude to write.
  • Within 10-15 miles of Ashland is ideal, but open to other options.
  • I’m also open to a place in town if I don’t have a spot outside of town and open to being in a home with the right person. 🙂

Timeframe

Ideally, I’d find a space that is available until fall of 2026.
But I’m also open to a short-term place.
These are the short-term date ranges. I’ll be on foraging/speaking tours in between.

  • Summer to fall (Late June or late July to early October)
  • Early winter (early November to January 1st)
  • March to mid-July 2026

Exchange

I’m open to hearing what would enrich life and be mutually beneficial for my host.
This could be a monetary exchange, a work trade, sharing my knowledge and skills, etc.

Photographed is the 10×10 tiny house (see a video tour here) I built in a backyard in Orlando, Florida in 2018 during my year of growing and foraging 100% of my food.

I am grateful to be back in my homeland with everyone in the Chequamegon Bay area and I’m elated to be of service to the community and to be a steward to the land and water that we call home.
I am leading foraging walks twice per month this summer and fall. These are free and all are welcome to attend. I’m also hosting Foraging Schools in Ashland, Duluth, Minneapolis and Madison in August.

For more details about my return to Ashland, see my post here.

I’ll be freely and joyously sharing my skills and knowledge with the community to help us live in more harmony with Earth, our fellow humans and the plants and animals we share this home with.

I can be reached at info@robingreenfield.org or 619-537-8828.

Health and happiness to you,
Robin
