This vacant lot was transformed from a place known for drug activity and full of trash into a community garden and art museum!

DeWayne Barton started the Peace Garden to create a safe space for his community to gather. It began as a way to protest war – both the war in Iraq and the war on drugs – bringing people together through food and art.

The Peace Gardens include a pavilion and performance stage, meditation areas and a library, vegetable beds a greenhouse and more! It’s entirely run by volunteers. They deliver fresh produce to neighborhood elders. So far they have shared over 1,500 pounds for free!

“The Burton Street Peace Garden was created to help absorb trauma and inject inspiration and connection. Value you, value me and together the Earth.” -DeWayne Barton
