A Life Update After the Experiment of Non-Ownership

Hello Dear Friends,

As my Non-Ownership Experiment comes to an end, I’d like to share what my future holds.

As planned, after three months I left Griffith Park on April 20th. I am now on a month-long speaking tour throughout California, traveling with no possessions or money, carrying just the few borrowed items I have. My talks are free to attend, and I receive basics of food, lodging and transportation from the community who supports me. This is a practice of the gift economy and non-linear transactions, the way humanity has functioned for much of our existence…

In June I will return to my homeland of Northern Wisconsin, where my next chapter will begin.

For one year I will be foraging 100% of my food (fishing and hunting too), in relationship with the plants and animals that I share this Earth home with. Preparation for the year will begin this summer and I plan to officially begin on the first day of fall.

I am eager and yearning to return to living closely with the land. My love for Earth has deepened while living outside in Griffith Park, but I have struggled to live this love as fully as I’d like. I will be aiming to embody this love with every relationship I have and every action I take.

Over the next ten years I will be planting one million fruit and nut trees through a grassroots collaborative effort of thousands of friends and colleagues across the nation. We have planted 2,000 Community Fruit Trees since 2018 and our limiting factor has been the cost of purchasing trees. We will now be growing our own trees through starting 100 local micro-nurseries that can each produce about 1,000 trees per year.

I will spend much of the next two years near Lake Superior, where I was born and raised. The waters of this region course through my veins and the land is in my DNA. I am called here and will be exploring creating a Simple Living Center on this land, where people can come from near and far to learn to live in harmony with Earth, humanity and the plants and animals we share this home with.
