Day 6 of Change the World: Healthy and Ethical Food Day!

Today, we’ll talk about how you can eat in a manner that is good for you, your community, animals, and the earth. We’ll also be preparing our dinner with a stove that we make from an aluminum can!

As you voted, today we picked our dinner at an organic farm. We got cactus, papaya, kale, chard, cabbage, green onions, beets, grape fruits, Jamaica, aloe vera, basil, and squash blossoms.

With these ingredients we made a salad, sautéed veggies, and brewed up a tea. We learned about farming in the Baja and had a great time on the organic farm. 

After visiting the farm we did some dumpster diving at the large super markets but had no luck. However, we only visited a few stores so I can not say either way if the markets waste food here like we do in the USA. A few of the stores had trash compactors so we could not access the goods inside if there were any. I will return to the Mexican dumpsters another day. 

Here are some basics to ethical and healthy eating that will help you eat in a manner that is good for you, your community, and the earth: 

1. Eat more fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, and nuts, and less industrially produced meat, dairy, and eggs. 

2. Stick to whole foods rather than processed foods. If it’s in the same shape as it was when it came from the earth you are good to go. 

3. Shop locally and purchase food that was grown locally. Farmers markets, CSA’s and co-ops are all good options. At the very least, make sure to buy food from your own country. 

4. Purchase organic/natural food when possible. This will keep chemicals out of your body, the farmer’s body, and all the creatures’ bodies.

5. Buy unpackaged foods. By doing this, you will not be creating trash and recyclables when eating. The bulk food section will become a good friend of yours. 

6. Use reusable bags for your groceries including your produce.

7. Don’t waste food. We throw away 30-50% of our food in America. Be a part of the solution. 

8. Eat with the seasons. 

9. Compost your food scraps. If you don’t want to do the composting yourself, then give the scraps to someone who will.

10. Prepare your own meals and eat out less. 

11. Teach others and spread knowledge!
